‘I’ve saved over £1,000 thanks to my health cash plan!’
A PES employee’s view
When you consider everything a health cash plan offers, it could seem too good to be true. Happily though, it isn’t – as one PES employee can confirm. In just one year, HR Partner Pam Rawlings has received almost £1,400 worth of healthcare – for a personal contribution of less than £300.
In return, she’s enjoyed a roll call of treatments which may make her sound like a one-woman health crisis in heels. In fact, as you’ll see, she’s falling apart no quicker than the rest of us – in fact, probably considerably more slowly, thanks to the health cash plan.
What has the health cash plan paid for?
Opticians: monthly payment for contact lenses plus annual eye check for lenses, and an eye test for new glasses every two years.
Physiotherapy: ‘I’ve had three shoulder operations so my neck and shoulders do get stiff. Deep tissue massage and acupuncture help to sort that out.’
Shoulder problems? Surely Pam must be very sporty? ‘No chance. My physio thinks it’s from carrying my baby around on my hip when she was little.’ Any one of us could need physiotherapy at any time.
Chiropody: ‘I walk around barefoot a lot at home. I won’t tell you what that does to my feet but let’s just say my chiropodist has her work cut out.’
Specialist consultation: ‘Oh yes, I had coccyx problems too. I used the cash plan to pay for a private consultation which got me referred much more quickly for the NHS treatment which cured it.’
Dental: ‘Ah, now here I don’t use the allowance in full. I have rather good teeth actually!’ But still, the regular dental check-up has to be paid for – even if the hygienist refuses to waste her time on those already-perfect teeth.
‘I don’t want to give the impression I’m a walking wreck, although my colleagues might disagree!’ says Pam. ‘But I’ve found that day-to-day health expenses can really mount up. It was worth upgrading my health cash plan cover as I got way more back than I put in.’
What does PES provide?
Like all PES employees, Pam already enjoyed Level 1 cover with our cash plan provider Health Shield, paid for by the company. PES also provides a flexible benefit fund for each of us to spend on a range of other benefits.
Pam used her benefit fund to upgrade her cover to Level 4, which made the annual premium just £286.80. Not bad, considering the return.
‘Obviously no-one wants to get ill, but we all require maintenance! I still walk, talk and breathe, but perhaps I wouldn’t if I didn’t do things to stay healthy. Not everyone has a dodgy shoulder or a barefoot-walking habit, but who wouldn’t benefit from a deep tissue massage after sitting at a desk all day?’
