‘My favourite employee benefit so far’ – a PES employee’s view

Sunning myself on the balcony of my hotel room in Lanzarote back in March, it was hard to believe that the UK was blanketed in snow. But when my phone buzzed with a notification from the airline that my flight back to Blighty was cancelled, I knew the rumours must be true.
The cases were packed, the last breakfast digested, the taxi to the airport almost booked…what should I do? Nothing for it but to ring my travel insurer’s emergency helpline.
And very helpful they were. I was told I’d be covered under the policy for travel delay. I’d get a fixed sum for every 12-hour period until I could get a flight home. When I discovered that the next suitable flight wouldn’t be for another 48 hours, it seemed churlish to do anything other than order a sangria, sit back and prepare for another couple of heavy days’ sunbathing.
I’ve never enjoyed a choice of employee benefits before working for PES. After mulling over what to spend my flexible benefit fund on, I opted for travel insurance. When the Beast from the East coincided with my holiday, I was very glad I did. Those two extra days (which happened to fall on a weekend) where largely paid for by a combination of the travel insurance cover and the airline’s flexibility in rearranging my flight.
The best thing of all is that the insurance hasn’t cost me a penny. Thanks to PES’s generosity, I had enough change in my flexible benefit fund to pay the premium. This was after upgrading to a Level 2 health cash plan (which has also saved me hundreds in dentist and physiotherapy fees, by the way).
What’s not to like? I can honestly say it creates a great feeling, knowing that your employer cares about things that make life easier.
